Auburn Leather’s standard thickness of a leather lace is 7 ounces =
7/64” or 2.8 mm.
To achieve this thickness, we purchase light-weight hides, which after cleaning and
leveling, will process into an even 7 ounce leather, without removing too much of the flesh
side of the hide. This leveling/splitting process is performed only in the raw state, prior to
coloring and retanning, so that the integrity of the hide is not compromised. Our leather is
considered “full weight” which gives the leather laces full strength.

Colors of Leather Laces
The process of coloring is performed at our own plant. The tanned hides are colored or
dyed in large drums, as opposed to top sprayed as is most upper leather. We offer two
options of dyeing leather:

Surfaced Dyed - The color is applied to the grain (top) and flesh (bottom) of the hide. The
cross-section or middle portion of the hide is left in its natural tanned state.

Struck Thru - The hides are actually dyed twice—once with a penetrating dye which
colors the interior section or the middle portion, covering the color of the tannage, and
second with a surface dye which colors only the grain (top) and flesh (bottom) sides.
